Workers compensation statistics help agencies to understand critical areas and problems that affect California workers. A claim represents each employee or survivor that filed for benefits, meaning that there may be multiple claims for a case.
As of August 2021, there were 13,590 claims filed in California and 10,818 cases. Of the over 13,000 applications filed, 5,592 claims have been denied, and 4,222 cases have been dismissed. California has paid out $662,640,221 in total compensation for worker’s compensation claims, including medical bills. The state Division of Workers’ Compensation (DWC) discovered that between January 2020 and June 2021, COVID surpassed transportation incidents as the number one cause of job-related fatalities claimed in California.
