SSI v. SSDI: What’s the Difference?
Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) and Supplemental Security Income (SSI) are both programs administered by the Social Security Administration (SSA) to provide financial assistance to individuals with disabilities. However, they differ significantly in their eligibility criteria and funding sources.
SSDI is an earned benefit program. It provides monthly payments to disabled individuals who have a sufficient work history and have recently paid Social Security taxes. To qualify for SSDI, an applicant must meet a strict definition of disability as defined by the SSA.
This definition requires a medically determinable impairment that is expected to last at least one year and significantly limits the ability to perform substantial gainful activity. The applicant must also have enough work credits earned during a specific period (determined by their age when they become disabled). The benefit amount for SSDI is based on an individual's average covered earnings over their working career.
SSI, on the other hand, is a needs-based program. This program provides financial assistance to low-income individuals who are blind, disabled, or age 65 or older. Unlike SSDI, there is no work history requirement.
However, to qualify, an applicant must have a qualifying disability as defined by the SSA and meet strict income and resource limitations. The benefit amount for SSI is a fixed federal benefit rate, adjusted annually for cost-of-living increases.
